According to the Ministry of Home Affairs of India, last year 41 citizens renounced their Indian citizenship and obtained the citizenship of Pakistan. 

They became Pakistanis after giving up their citizenship, but in 2021, 41 people gave up their Indian citizenship to get Pakistani citizenship. 

According to the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times, according to government data, from 2015 to 2021, a total of 9,32,276 Indian citizens gave up Indian citizenship to get passports of other countries. 


Last year, 163,000 Indian citizens renounced their citizenship, which is the highest number since 2015. 

About half of them i.e. 78 thousand 284 got US citizenship. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the reasons for leaving citizenship were personal. 

Keep in mind that under the Constitution of India, no citizen can have dual citizenship and to take citizenship of another country. 

Indian citizenship has to be given up. After the United States, Australia (23 thousand 533), Canada (21 thousand 597), Great Britain (14 thousand 637), Italy (5 thousand 987) and Singapore (2 thousand 516) are among the most preferred countries for obtaining citizenship. ) were the top ones respectively. 

According to the data, 326 Indian citizens in the United Arab Emirates renounced the citizenship of the country for the citizenship of Albania, France, Malta, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Bahrain, Cyprus, Ireland, Jordan, Norway, Singapore, Sri Lanka and other countries. Apply. 

According to the data shared in November last year, 10 thousand 645 people applied for Indian citizenship, out of which the majority, seven thousand 782 people were citizens of Pakistan and 795 were citizens of Afghanistan. 

According to the Ministry of Interior, 2016 From 2020, 452 stateless persons also applied for Indian citizenship. 

However, it is not clear how many of them have been granted citizenship. 

Last year, the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs said that 1 crore 33 lakh 83 thousand 718 Indian citizens live in other countries.
