Khawaja Syed Chishti, the spiritual leader of Muslims from Afghanistan, has been assassinated in the Indian state of Maharashtra.
According to India's news website NDTV, 35-year-old Khawaja Syed Chishti, popularly known as 'Sufi Baba' He was shot dead at a place about 200 km from Mumbai.
According to police officials, he was shot in the head and died on the spot. Police officer Sachin Patil said that Syed Chishti's driver is the main accused.
Eyewitnesses have named his driver. The accused is being questioned. According to police, Syed Chishti had been residing in Yola town of Nasik for many years.
He may have been killed in connection with a plot of land he acquired with the help of locals, but as an Afghan citizen he could not buy land in the country. It happened in an open plot in DC area.
It may be recalled that since Nopur Sharma's blasphemy last month, a series of killings and false cases against Muslims by extremist Hindu police and political parties have become commonplace in India.
