Doha: 8 ex-soldiers including 2 Indian naval commanders arrested in Qatar for spying for Israel could be sentenced to death.

According to the Indian newspaper, 8 retired officers including Commander Parinanda Tiwari, the Indian Navy's highest military honoree, worked at Al Zahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services in Qatar.

These eight former Indian Navy officers were arrested by Qatar's State Security Bureau in August last year. Two of the 8 arrested Navy personnel were commanders.

The Modi government was not aware of the arrests of these former officers in Qatar. The unsuspecting Indian Ministry of Defense and Foreign Affairs learned of the arrest through a tweet from the wife of one of the detainees.

Qatari intelligence had been tracking digital messages from officials sharing important national secrets with Israel.

These 8 former Indian marines detained in Qatar have been accused of spying for Israel.

According to Qatar's investigative agency, these officials gave Israel details of Qatar's secret program to purchase advanced submarines from Italy.

The chief executive of a private defense company was also arrested on these charges, including the head of Qatar's international military operations, and eight Indian naval officers were also employed by the same company.

On May 3, the former Indian Navy personnel are on trial for spying for Israel, which could face the death penalty.
