India votes for new president, tribal woman favorite

India's Parliament has started voting for the election of the new president, for which a woman candidate from a backward tribal community is being declared as the favorite. 

Draupadi Murmu belongs to the Santhal tribe. She is from and has been nominated for the official post by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also belongs to the same party. 

If elected, Draupadi will be the country's first A tribal and another woman will be the president. 

The current president of the country, Ram Nath Kovind, is the second president of the country who belongs to the Dalit community, which is considered a lower caste in India. 

The 64-year-old Murmu was a school teacher in the eastern state of Odisha before joining politics. 

She has also served in important positions in the state, including the governor of the nearby state of Jharkhand. 

After being nominated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi "Marmu has dedicated his life to serving the society and empowering the weak," tweeted Marmu. 

His main rival for the presidential candidate is senior politician Yashwant Sinha, who was part of the BJP in the past. 


and has also served as Minister of Finance and Minister of External Affairs.

Yashwant, who is currently one of the fiercest critics of the Narendra Modi government, wrote in a tweet on Sunday that the contest for the presidential election this year is not between two people but two ideologies. 

According to him, only one side wants That the clauses and values ​​mentioned in our constitution should be protected. 

In India, the president is elected by about 500 elected members of parliament and regional legislatures spread across the country. 

Each vote is weighted in terms of the size of the constituency.
If no candidate gets more than 50 percent, the lowest number of votes. 

The winning candidate is eliminated from the competition and their votes are redistributed until a candidate meets the required criteria. 
The result will be announced later this week.
