Heat wave in southwestern Europe, fires spread over thousands of acres of forests

A summer heatwave in parts of southwestern Europe entered its sixth day on Saturday, sparking devastating forest fires. 

Some parts of the continent may also set new temperature records early next week. Firefighters in France, Portugal, Spain and Greece are battling wildfires. 

Fires in these countries have destroyed thousands of acres of land since the beginning of the week, while several officials have also died. 

This is the second heat wave to engulf southwestern Europe in recent weeks. 

They blame climate change as the main cause and continue to predict the severity of the weather. 


Firefighters in the coastal town of Arcachon in the southwestern Gironde region of France are trying to control two wildfires.

The weather service in France has forecast temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius in the south of France on Saturday, while new heat records are expected on Monday.
