The bodies of at least 46 people have been found in a truck in San Antonio, Texas, according to the Associated Press.
Authorities also transported 15 other people from the truck to a local hospital.
San Antonio's local news channel Voyage reported that police were investigating whether the dead were immigrants.
Police in San Antonio did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The news can be seen in pictures shared on Twitter by the news channel.
There are a large number of policemen around a trailer while ambulances are also parked there.
According to the Associated Press, tens of thousands of people have died over the past decade trying to enter the United States illegally from the Mexican border, and this is the deadliest of them all.
Immigrants were killed in a truck, while in 2003, 19 illegal immigrants were killed in a truck accident.
