Missile attack on Ukrainian shopping mall Russias hope for humanity in vain'

At least 13 people were killed and more than 40 were injured in the attack, the regional governor said. 

Russian long-range missiles fired missiles at a crowded shopping mall in the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk, killing 13 people, according to the AP news agency. 

He described the attack as the deadliest terrorist attack in European history, saying "more than a thousand citizens were inside the shopping mall, many of whom managed to escape." 

Photographs from the scene show black smoke, dust and orange flames.

The UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting in New York on Tuesday to discuss the attack. 

The missile strike comes as Western leaders reiterated their support for Ukraine and the world's largest Economies are preparing to impose new sanctions on Russia, including higher oil prices and higher tariffs on goods. 

The United States, meanwhile, appears to be in agreement with Zelensky's demand for more air defense systems. 

NATO plans to nearly eight times the size of its immediate response force to 300,000 troops. 

"It appears that Russian forces deliberately targeted the shopping center. Today's Russian attack on a shopping mall in Kremenchok is one of the most fearless terrorist attacks in European history," he said. 

According to Ukrainian officials, Russian long-range bombers fired missiles that hit a shopping center in Kremenchok, as well as another missile that landed on a sports field. 

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky says "Russia's hopes for politeness and humanity are useless."
