Colombia has asked Israel's ambassador to leave the country after a diplomatic row over the Palestinian issue.
Colombian President Gustavo Pietro compared the Israeli attacks on Gaza to the Nazi persecution of Jews.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Petro accused Israeli Defense Minister Yves Gallant of using the same language for the people of Gaza that "the Nazis used for the Jews."
On October 7, Hamas attacked Israeli bases and settlements, killing more than 1,400 Israelis. More than children are involved.
Colombia's first left-wing president took to social media to compare Israel's siege of Gaza to the actions of Nazi Germany, claiming that "the democratic people cannot allow Nazism to be reinstated in international politics."
President Petrou said his country does not support "genocide".
The Colombian president also said that if Colombia wants to suspend foreign relations with Israel, we suspend them.
With this statement, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Colombian ambassador Margarita Manjeres on Sunday and informed her about the decision to ban Israeli security exports.
It should be remembered that Colombia has been a close friend of Israel in Latin America for the past two decades, but has diplomatic relations with both Israel and Palestine.
A Clash of words on social media between the Israeli ambassador to Colombia and President Petro started a week ago when the Colombian president refused to condemn the Hamas attacks.
When Israeli Ambassador Gali Dagan asked President Petro to talk about the 'terror attack', the Colombian president responded by saying: 'Terrorism kills innocent children, whether in Colombia or in Palestine.'
He said Israel had turned Gaza into a "detention center".
After this tension, Colombian Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva said that the Israeli ambassador "should at least apologize and leave".
Leyva described Israel's response to Petros as "disgraceful" on social media.
