The cryptocurrency that replaced the underground drain under the school of mining

Instead of banknotes, digital currencies or cryptocurrencies are now very popular, especially among the youth, while government officials working in various fields around the world are now trusting digital currencies and taking the lead when buying them.

A recent example of this comes from the US state of Massachusetts, where a city official was involved in illegal cryptocurrency mining underground (on the outskirts) of a school.

Nadeem Nahas, 39, who has been appointed assistant director of the Wasset facility, asked the court on Friday not to sentence him in the case.

Nadeem Nehas is accused of tampering with equipment and illegal use of electricity at Cohasset High School, outside Boston.

Crypto is a digital currency mined by specialized computer processors.

This digital currency transaction uses power-intensive computers that consume a lot of electricity.

"Authorities were first alerted to a possible crypto mining operation in December 2021," Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley told the BBC in a statement.

According to the police chief, this operation was carried out from the school's basement (for the drainage pipe), which was announced by Cohasset High School.

When investigators questioned the principal, Nadeem Nahas, he said that during a routine check of the school, he found electrical wires, makeshift wiring and several computers that were out of place.

Meanwhile, authorities found underground computers used in cryptocurrency mining illegally connected to the school's electrical system, police said.

The investigation into the incident involved the US Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security, which investigated the matter for three months and implicated Director Nadeem Nahas in the matter.

According to court documents, the cryptocurrency mining operation took place from April to December 2021, during which the high school's electric bill totaled approximately $17,500.

Nadeem Nehas worked for the city of Cohasset until January 2021, after which he resigned from his position.

When the BBC contacted Cohasset Public Schools for their position on the matter, they asked that the police statement be qualified. However, in a statement to CBS News, he pledged full cooperation with police during the investigation.
