Pope Francis has emphasized the preservation of the historical and legal status of occupied Jerusalem.
Arab News quoted the Palestinian news agency as saying that Pope Francis expressed concern about the escalation of violence in Jerusalem at an annual meeting with diplomats in Vatican City on Monday.
He said Jerusalem adheres to three religions, including Islam, Judaism and Christianity. It (Jerusalem) should be a forum for peace rather than an arena of conflict.
He expressed the hope that Palestine and Israel will resume direct negotiations in accordance with international laws and UN resolutions.
The Palestinian ambassador to the Holy See, Issa al-Kasiyya, conveyed President Muhammad Abbas' message of congratulations to Pope Francis, asking him to pray for justice, peace and the Palestinian people's right to self-determination in Jerusalem.
