Tehran: After a sketch of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was published in the French weekly Charlie Hebdo, Tehran announced the closure of a French research institute in the country.

As reported by Al Jazeera, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the ministry is ending the activities of the French Research Institute (IFRI) in Iran as a first step.

He said the French government should arrest "hate writers". Iran also called for a "serious fight against Islamophobia and Islamophobia" in France.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasir Kanani said that France has no right to insult the sanctity of other Muslim countries and nations under the pretext of freedom of expression.
