More than 500 migrants, including pregnant women, are allowed to enter Italy

Italy has allowed more than 500 migrants aboard two boats rescued in the Mediterranean to enter the country. There are 248 migrants on board the Geo-Barentship of the non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

Doctors Without Borders welcomed Italy's decision to allow the migrants, saying it would take 24 hours for them to arrive at the south coast port of Port of Salerno.

MSF says it's good news that migrants have reached a safe place after a tragic accident. The migrants were rescued from the Mediterranean two days ago because of bad weather.

Responding to calls for help from aid ships in the Mediterranean is a challenge for Italy's new right-wing government, which has taken a tough stance on immigration.

Speaking at the Euro-Mediterranean meeting in Alicante, Spain, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, referring to NGO ships, said that each "case is unique". It is anchored in the port.

Italian media have said that the ship Humanity One and another SOS NGO, the ship Humanity, were allowed to dock in the port of Bari.

The Humanity ship is carrying 261 migrants, including 30 women, some pregnant, and 90 children. Most expats travel alone. A spokesman for SOS Humanity was not immediately available for comment.

MSF said a 14-year-old boy was flown to Sicily by Geobarents because of severe abdominal pain. The boy was traveling alone. A woman gave birth on the same ship on Wednesday. They were then sent to Sicily along with the other three children.
