What is it like to live in the coldest city in the world?

The average winter temperature here is minus 30 degrees Celsius.

By the way, Antarctica is the coldest continent in the world, but it is not inhabited by people, only a few scientists live there for research purposes.

So Antarctica may be called the coldest place on earth, but which city on earth is the coldest?

So, this honor goes to the city of Yakutsk in Russia, which is located in the Siberian region.

It is one of the coldest places on earth and is home to about 3.5 million people, most of whom work for a company that owns a diamond mine there.

It is the capital of Sakha Province in northern Russia.

In winter, the temperature of this city reaches minus 60 degrees Celsius.

Some locals claim the temperature drops even lower, but this cannot be verified as thermometers do not work below minus 63 degrees Celsius.

In summer the average temperature reaches 29 degrees Celsius, but in winter it usually remains below minus 30 degrees, with the lowest temperature recorded in February 1987 being minus 65 degrees Celsius.

The Lena flowing there freezes over in winter.

The city is located 8468 km from the Russian capital Moscow and is connected to the country by the Lena highway.

It is so cold here that even digging for a building or a grave turns out to be very difficult, and even planes cannot fly here or grow crops in cold weather.

There are several theatres, museums and old houses, while a fun fair is held every June.

Most of the houses here are built on very low stilts and the region is rich in natural resources such as gold and diamonds.

When you leave the house, snow often forms around your eyes.

It's hard to move in the cold

So, Yakutsk is the coldest city in the world, but in the countryside or in the city of Oymyakon in Siberia the weather is even colder.

500 people live in this place and in 1924 the temperature was measured at minus 71.2 degrees Celsius.

Interestingly, Yakutsk and Oymyakon are not close to each other, but there is a distance of 577 miles between them.

For what reason is it so cool in these two spots? Furthermore, for what reason really do peoples live in such a brutal climate?

According to experts, the Siberian region is very far and high above sea level and due to the combination of these two it is very cold there.

Omiyakon

As for Yakutsk and Oymyakon, these two places are situated in valleys and surrounded by high hills.

As a result, heavy cold air "gets stuck" near the valley's surface, resulting in record low temperatures.

For what reason truly do peoples live there regardless of such a cruel environment?

According to experts, the people who live there take pride in where they live and how they manage to maintain routines even in such difficult places.
