Three Israelis and dozens of Palestinians were injured in overnight clashes after militants opened fire on a Jewish shrine in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, AFP reported.

The Palestinian Red Crescent says 64 wounded Palestinians have been bandaged, most of them affected by tear gas.

The Israeli army stopped hundreds of pilgrims at the entrance outside the tomb of Joseph in the city of Nablus.

A statement said that during a ceremony here, Palestinian gunmen opened fire on the pilgrims, killing two.

And a commander of the Shimron Brigade of the Israeli army was wounded. Some people believe that this tomb is the last resting place of Prophet Joseph (pbuh) according to the Bible.

The place is also revered by Muslims. In May, a 16-year-old Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli soldiers during a clash near the tomb.

The Israeli military says it provides security for Israeli pilgrims arriving on a monthly basis.

The Israeli military says 12 people were arrested in separate operations in the West Bank on Wednesday night. Nineteen people were injured in the crackdown.

Israeli security forces are conducting raids in the West Bank almost daily.
