A British tourist has been fined for dipping his feet in a famous fountain in Rome.

A holidaymaker has been fined €500 (£424) for cooling his feet in a fountain in the Italian capital's famous Piazza di Spagna, next to the city's famous steps.

According to local media, the police officers have also temporarily banned the entry of this 42-year-old man into the area.

The Spanish Steps, famously featured in the Audrey Hepburn film Roman Holiday, have strict rules but have recently seen several incidents of vandalism by tourists.

In June, an American tourist threw her scooter down the stairs and caused £20,000 worth of damage but was only fined £430.

In May, a Saudi tourist drove a Maserati down to the famous Piazza di Spagna fountain.

They allegedly took a wrong turn due to which the vehicle went down the steps.

A number of people have been fined for jumping into Rome's Trevi Fountain when the summer months are sweltering.

Recent extreme heat has forced Italy to use less water during its worst drought in 70 years and a state of emergency has been declared in four of its northern regions.

Forest fire incidents to triple in 2022. Devastating forest fires have also raged in other parts of Europe, including Portugal and France, as temperatures across the continent have soared above 40 degrees.
