According to officials, 21 people have died and 30 others have fallen ill after drinking adulterated alcohol in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad.
Mukesh Parmar, a senior government official, said, "These deaths took place in Ahmedabad and Butad districts in the state of Gujarat, where the production and sale of liquor is banned."
He said that it was not immediately known which chemical was used in the alcohol. The police have arrested several suspects who were involved in the illegal sale of this harmful liquor.
Deaths from distilled liquor are frequent in India. Its effect is enhanced by the addition of various chemicals.
