Former Tunisian Prime Minister detained in hospital

Hamadi has been detained for allegedly transferring large sums of money to a charity.

Former Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi al-Jabali was admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit on Saturday after being arrested last week on money laundering charges and has been on a hunger strike ever since.

According to the report, Zaid Tahir, the lawyer of Hamadi Al-Jabali, said that his condition deteriorated rapidly as he was on a severe hunger strike and he had not taken any medicine for heart disease and diabetes.

The former prime minister was on a severe hunger strike, he did not even take medicine.

Lawyer Zaid Tahir further said that after the former prime minister was taken to the police station, the police did not deliver the drugs used by him to Hamadi Al-Jabali's cell.

Al-Nahda has denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating "Similar, baseless allegations concerning Tunisia have been made more than once.

The arrest of the Prime Minister is part of a campaign for political scoring.

Tunisian President Qais Saeed ousted the Tunisian government in July last year and suspended the Ennahda party's parliament, after which opponents called the only democracy that emerged from the Arab Spring uprisings a coup.

Saeed dissolved the assembly, expanded his powers over the judiciary, and sought to change the country's constitution.

Besides, former justice minister Nooruddin Bheri was also kept under house arrest for two months without any charges but was later released.
