Iran has sentenced a Swedish man of Iranian descent to death for spying for Israel.

Ahmed Reza Jalali, a medical doctor and researcher who was detained during an educational visit to Iran in 2016, will be executed on May 21.

The report comes as Hamid Nouri, a former Iranian prosecutor arrested by Swedish authorities in 2019, faces a life sentence in Sweden on charges of international crimes and human rights abuses.

Hamid Nouri is accused of playing a key role in the execution of political prisoners at the Gohardasht prison in the Iranian city of Karaj on government orders in 1988.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry No comment was made.

Under Swedish law, courts can prosecute Swedish citizens and other nationals for crimes against international law abroad.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish ambassador on Monday to "inform him of the baseless and fabricated allegations made by the Swedish prosecutor against Iran during Nouri's trial."
