Senegal hospital fire kills 11 newborns

President Macky Sell expresses regret over the incident in a tweet

A fire at a hospital in the West African country of Senegal has killed 11 newborns.

According to the French news agency AFP, the tragic incident took place in the city of Tiffany.

The Senegalese president also expressed sympathy and condolences to the parents of the children who died in the fire.

Diaf Sai, a political leader in the country, said the incident took place at a hospital in Dabkh, citing a short circuit.

Three children have been rescued. Local media have reported that the hospital that caught fire recently opened and a fire broke out in the maternity ward.

Health Minister Abdullah Diaf Sar He is in Geneva to meet with officials, shortening his visit and saying he will return to Senegal soon.

The incident is being investigated.

There have been several health incidents in Senegal in the past, with huge gaps between urban and remote health facilities.

In late April, a hospital fire broke out in the northern region of Langue, and four newborns were born.

The mayor of the city said the fire was caused by a spark in the air conditioning unit of the maternity ward.

"More children die in government hospital, it's unacceptable," wrote President Macky Sall in a tweet.

We share the grief of the bereaved families. "
