The Palestinian Ministry of Health says an Al Jazeera journalist has been shot dead while covering an Israeli attack on the occupied West Bank.

According to the Associated Press, Shireen Abu Aqila, a well-known Palestinian reporter for the organization's Arabic-language channel, was shot dead shortly afterwards.

Another Palestinian journalist working for the Jerusalem-based Al-Quds newspaper was wounded but was out of danger.

The health ministry said the journalists had been shot by Israeli forces.

In the video footage of the incident, Abu Aqila can be seen wearing a blue flake jacket with the word "press" clearly written on it.

He was attacked with heavy bullets and explosives during which he returned fire.

The Israeli military says it is investigating the incident and is examining the possibility that journalists have been targeted by Palestinian officials.

Israelis have long criticized Al Jazeera's coverage, but authorities Guevara Boudiri, another Al Jazeera reporter, was briefly detained during a protest rally in Jerusalem last year.
