At about 12 years old, David Mayman tried to make a helicopter out of an old fence and an old lawn mower.
Needless to say, the effort was not very successful. Their machine could not fly and they had to repair the garden fence.
"I was raised in a way that I think science has become like a challenge for me. I've always been told that nothing is impossible
In his childhood in Sydney, Australia, he tried to do things bigger than his age. Growing up, David Mayman built state-of-the-art machines that could really fly.
After selling his online business, he built a jet pack, which he flew around the Statue of Liberty in New York.

But since 2018, he has been working on a different project, which he believes will give him more business opportunities.
Their new machine, called the Spider, is a flying motorcycle. It will rise vertically in the air and then fly very fast. This machine will be large enough to fit in a pickup truck.
Spider is one of the many flying machine projects being worked on.
Hundreds of flying machines, called EVTOLs, are in the process of being developed. Engineers hope that the era of cheap and low-noise air transport will soon begin.
However, David Mayman's machine is very different from these aircraft. Instead of batteries and electric engines, the Mayman Speeder is powered by four smaller engines, which are powered by aviation fuel.
This is a step backwards in terms of innovation and technology, but Mayman thinks that only liquid fuel will attract consumers.
He says the military, emergency services and the oil and gas extraction industry at sea want an aircraft that is small and can carry a lot of weight. For this you need fuel used in aircraft which provides 20 times more power to carry a certain weight than batteries. It will take a lot of weight and big batteries to carry that much weight.
David Mayman explains that "if you want to carry a certain weight and you want a specific range and speed for the aircraft in which it is to be carried, this can only be done with current technology, ie turbines." Only through the engine.
The idea for Spider came to Mayman while working with the US Navy. The Navy was interested in acquiring jet packs for its special forces, ie sales.
The situation was similar in the aviation industry. You start working on a machine with a specific feature and soon a machine with a completely different feature comes into play. '
David Mayman stated that he initially wanted an airplane that could carry a weight of 95 kg, but was working on a project that would allow him to carry a 135 kg machine. He also wanted someone to be trained for the job in 10 minutes.
This could not have happened with the current jet pack. It needed a machine that was big and easy to fly. That's how the Spider Project came into being. Some of the jet pack technology worked for this, but most had to be done from scratch.
The direction of flight in the jet pack has to be controlled by the pilot on a regular basis, while in the spider it is done by the electronic flight control system.
Mayman said the owner of the spider would not need a license because the spider's flight control system works most of the time during the flight.

"The spider is effectively an artificial intelligence machine that knows when and what work is needed. It controls the engines as needed.
David Mayman hopes the spider will be used to transport equipment. He believes that various agencies will show interest in Spider, especially the demand for Spider from the Armed Forces and Emergency Services.
The speed of the spider is 200 miles per hour while it can fly up to 60 minutes. Maymann says it can deliver essential supplies to the military and emergency services quickly and to the desired location.
In addition, Cargo Mode, when operated by remote control, can travel at speeds of up to 500 miles per hour and weigh up to 450 kg.
David Mayman thinks that because it is a small and complete machine, it can travel in all weathers and is more efficient than a helicopter.

But if you're more excited and happy that you're going to sit on it and fly over buses, cars and traffic, Mayman says it's less likely to be used in cities.
"It's very noisy, it's very powerful and very small. I don't think there is a need for an aircraft in urban areas that is about the size of your dining table.
This flying bike needs to be thoroughly tested before being delivered to consumers.
If all goes according to plan, this flying motorcycle called the Spider will be available to the general public by 2024 or 2025, while the Army may get it earlier.
