Russia praises India's stance on Ukraine crisis in China: Will relations between the two countries improve?

China's state-run media has been praising India's "independent" stance on Ukraine, and Chinese media appear to be defending India's independent foreign policy.

The point is being made in the Chinese media that the same policy of China and India on the Russian invasion of Ukraine could be the basis for warming up the relations between the two countries.

Relations between the two countries are strained after clashes between Indian and Chinese forces in 2020.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in India on March 25 for a two-day visit, the first by a senior Chinese official to India since the military clashes in Ladakh.

However, Indian Foreign Minister SJ Shankar told reporters after talks with his Chinese counterpart that he did not see relations with China as separate from border tensions.

India has maintained that relations between the two countries could not be normalized in the face of tensions on the border.

Experts say China will continue to highlight India's position on Ukraine to justify its ambiguous position on Ukraine.

Definition of Indian Foreign Policy

China is being pressured by Western nations to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine and to use its influence to end the crisis.

In such an environment, China's official sources are expressing friendship with India, which is acting very cautiously diplomatically because it does not condemn Russia.

China's state-run newspaper Global Times wrote in a March 16 report that the situation in Ukraine had forced India to reconsider its relations with the West and adopt a "dignified stance".

Similarly, the Chinese media has been defending India's decision to buy oil from Russia and has advised Western countries, including the United States, not to make a fuss over India's legitimate move.

After the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Zi to India, an editorial published in the Global Times wrote that the Ukraine crisis reflected the common interests of India and China.

The joint position of India and China was also promoted on Chinese state TV channels.

In a meeting with Ajit Adol, India's national security adviser, Wang said without directly referring to Ukraine, that the world would listen to India and China when they spoke in unison.

Ukraine Crisis 'Used' to Harm Quad

The Chinese media, while praising India's policy on the Ukraine crisis, suggested that India reconsider its decision to join the Quadrilateral.

In recent weeks, there have been comments in Chinese media criticizing the three other members of the Quad Alliance, India, the United States, Australia and Japan, over the situation in Ukraine.

Global Times wrote that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kashida, during his visit to India, could not persuade Prime Minister Narendra Modi to change his position on the situation in Ukraine.

India did not impose sanctions on Russia like the United States, Australia and Japan did, which shook the foundations of the Quad Alliance, Global Times quoted the director of the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University as saying.

The state-run China Daily, in a March 24 editorial, criticized President Joe Biden's statement that India was "slightly shaken" by the Ukraine issue.

He has also been criticized in the Global Times for his criticism of Indian policy on the Ukraine crisis by the Australian media.

The newspaper wrote that the Modi government is not as submissive to the United States as the Australian government is. The newspaper also wrote that India is considering its national interests and strategic goals with a cool head.

Indian analysts also feel that China may be trying to take advantage of the Ukraine crisis to reduce the influence of the Quadrilateral.

Former Indian Ambassador to Denmark Yogesh Gupta told Hong Kong's independent newspaper South China Morning Post that Wang Zi wanted to know if India could move away from the US and form a group with China and Russia to form a quad. Unity is weak.

Is China-India relations going to improve?

The Chinese state media's praise of India's stance on Ukraine and Russia and the Chinese Foreign Minister's surprise visit to Delhi are clear indications of possible improvement in relations between the two countries.

Chinese media has also taken note of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message of sympathy for the plane crash in China.

Some Chinese observers also point to difficulties in improving relations between the two countries.

"India and the United States have very different views on Russia, but their views on China are in complete agreement," Liu Zhongi, a scholar with the Shanghai Institute of International Studies, told the Guanche News website.

Some experts believe that at a time when China's attitude towards the Ukraine crisis is being closely watched in the West, China will continue to highlight India's position on Ukraine.

Zhao Gancheng of the Shanghai Institute for International Studies told the South China Morning Post before the Chinese Foreign Minister's visit to India that the world was at a critical juncture and that South Asian countries, including India, had remained silent on the Ukraine crisis. Is.

"China needs their support on this issue," said Zhao Gancheng.
