The US Justice Department says it has uncovered an Iranian plot to kill former White House national security adviser John Bolton and charged a Revolutionary Guard official.

Reports cited the US Department of Justice as saying that 45-year-old Shahram Poursafi, also known as Mehdi Rezai, offered a man $300,000 to kill Bolton.

It has been suggested that the plan was made to avenge the death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

Prosecutors say the plot comes more than a year after Soleimani's death. Qassem Soleimani, head of the elite Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards and the architect of Iran's proxy battles in the Middle East, was shot dead at Baghdad Airport in January 2020.

They were killed in an airstrike. After the attack, Bolton, who had by then left his White House post, tweeted that "Hopefully this is the first step towards regime change in Tehran."

It comes as Iran renegotiates the 2015 nuclear deal in Vienna, which aims to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Tehran has been stalling the deal for months and has been demanding that the United States remove the Revolutionary Guards from its list of "sponsors of terrorism."

This is not the first time, said US Assistant Attorney General Matthew Oslin. "We have uncovered a plan by Iran to carry out retaliation on American soil, and we will continue to do so and thwart any such efforts," Porsaf said.

He allegedly tried to kill Bolton in early 2021, when he contacted an unknown person in the US online and asked for photos of Bolton.

The affidavit states Porsafy provided the man with Bolton's office address, including the name and other contact information of someone who worked in the office, while also taking photographs of Bolton's office.

He also offered $250,000, which rose to $300,000 during negotiations, according to the Justice Department. He will give a million dollars.'

"However, the second person was a confidential FBI source," according to the court document.

According to the report, in late April, PorseFi sent the entire amount in the form of cryptocurrency. Bolton thanked the FBI and the Department of Justice in a statement.

It is undeniable that the rulers of Iran are liars, terrorists and enemies of the United States.''He urged President Joe Biden not to renew the nuclear deal with Iran.
