India has imposed a 8 million fine on Amnesty International's local body, It is part of the Indian government's retaliation against him.

Human rights groups have long claimed that they are being harassed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist government for exposing human rights abuses in several cities, including the disputed region of Kashmir.

Local bank accounts were frozen in 2020 at the start of the investigation.

The organization was then forced to lay off its local staff and halt campaign and investigative work.

The Enforcement Directorate, the Financial Crimes Investigation Department in India, said on Friday that Amnesty International had not been able to expand its local operations.

Violated foreign funding laws with foreign aid. In a statement, the department said Amnesty India was fined 6.5 million for illegally receiving foreign donations, while its former chief executive, Akar Patel, was fined an additional 1.3 million.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It is part of a series of crackdowns on organizations. According to critics, like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Hungarian ruler Viktor Orban, Narendra Modi's government in India has kept its international funding in check to put pressure on human rights groups.

In 2015, a year after taking over, the Indian government froze the bank accounts of the India unit of the environmental organization Greenpeace.
