From Kennedy to Abe, the world's most assassinated world leaders

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated during a campaign rally on Friday, has been named one of the world's most assassinated leaders. 

The first and biggest name on the list is former US President John F. Kennedy, who was shot dead in Dallas, Texas in 1963. 

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat is paraded in Cairo on October 6, 1981. Militants opened fire and killed him. 


Indira Gandhi 

The Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984 in Delhi. 

His killing involved two Sikh guards who opened fire.


Rajiv Gandhi 

After the assassination of Indira Gandhi, his son Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister and held the post till 1989. 

Rajiv Gandhi was targeted by a Tamil suicide bomber in May 1991 while campaigning.

Olof Palm 

Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palm was assassinated in February 1986 as he walked home from a cinema in Stockholm with his wife. 

The motive for the killing is still unknown. 


Muhammad Boudiyev

Algerian President Muhammad Boudiyev was shot dead by his bodyguard in June 1992 while addressing a rally.

He had only been in office for six months.

Yitzhak Robin Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Robin was shot three times at close range by a Jewish extremist in November 1995 while attending a peace rally in Tel Aviv.

Benazir Bhutto

Former Pakistani Prime Minister and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in December 2007 in a suicide attack and shooting. 


Juvenal Moises

Haitian President Juvenal Moises was shot dead by armed commandos at his private residence at night in 2021. The case is under investigation.
