Japanese authorities are investigating an incident in which girls' high school athletes were given a sanitizer instead of water.
According to the French news agency AFP, one athlete fell ill after taking a large sip of sanitizer.
Japan's Yamanashi Prefecture hosted a girls' 5,000-meter race last Saturday in which organizers "accidentally" replaced a glass of water with a sanitizer and placed it at a drink station for athletes.
The Yamanashi High School Support Federation said the sanitizer, along with water bottles in a carton, was placed in an unlabeled bottle.
It is present everywhere in the world. According to the authorities, one player fell down after drinking sanitizer, he vomited and did not even take part in the competition.
Two athletes spit it out after drinking a sanitizer and took part in the race.
All three athletes were taken to hospital after the incident but were in good condition, Yamanashi Governor Kotaro Nagasaki said Monday.
They will investigate the incident.
"On behalf of the prefecture, I sincerely apologize to the players and their families," he said.
