The Mercedes-Benz 1955, of which only two versions are available, sold for 143 million ( 135 million) earlier this month, breaking all previous records. 

According to PK, RM Sotheby's, a company that sells classic cars, said on Thursday that it was the most expensive car ever sold in the world. 

The company said in a statement that the 1955 Mercedes-Benz had been sold to a private customer at a record price of 135 million euros at the auction.

The auction house said it was an invitation-only auction, which took place on May 5 at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. 

The car is one of only two prototypes built by the Mercedes-Benz Racing Department and is named after its chief engineer, Rudolph O'Hellenhot, according to Hui-RM Sodthabi.
